Plot

Season 1

The series begins with the news of the death of two potential heirs of the Earl of Grantham on the Titanic. Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham, realizes that his eldest daughter Mary can no longer inherit Downton Abbey due to the law of entail, which assumes the transfer of property only through the male line. As a result, the new heir becomes a distant relative, Matthew Crawley, who works as a lawyer in Manchester.

The action of the second season takes us to the years of the First World War. Matthew goes to the front and falls in love with his fiancée's sister, Lavinia Swire. Meanwhile, Downton Abbey is transformed into a hospital for the wounded. Lady Sybil Crawley, the Earl's youngest daughter, begins working as a nurse and falls in love with the chauffeur Tom Branson.

The war brings many changes, both for the Crawley family and for their servants. In particular, Matthew returns home paralyzed, but later miraculously recovers. The family's mission at that time is not only to preserve their ancestral estate, but also to support everyone around them during this difficult time.

Season 3

The plot of the third season focuses on the post-war period and includes heavy losses and significant changes. After the tragic death of Matthew in a car accident at the end of the third season, Mary is left a young widow with a young son.
