Prison Break is an American drama television series created by Paul Scheuring for Fox. The series premiered in 2005 and quickly became one of the most notable television phenomena of its time. The original series ran for four seasons, until 2009, and concluded with an extended two-hour finale airing on May 16, 2009. Several years later, the series was renewed: in 2017, Fox released a fifth season, which premiered on April 4.

The series was produced by Adelstein-Parouse Productions, Original Television, and 20th Century Fox Television. In addition to Scheuring, executive producers included Matt Olmstead, Kevin Hooks, Marty Adelstein, Dawn Parouse, Neal Moritz, and Brett Ratner, who also directed the pilot episode. The musical score was composed by Ramin Djawadi. Its tense and atmospheric score became an integral part of the series' identity, earning it an Emmy nomination in 2006.

The series centers on the story of two brothers, Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield. Lincoln is sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit, and Michael resolves to save him at any cost. To this end, he deliberately stages an armed bank robbery and is sent to Fox River State Penitentiary to await execution. Thanks to his remarkable intellect, meticulous planning, and complex manipulation, Scofield orchestrates a daring escape, the climax of the first season. The series subsequently expands beyond the confines of a single prison and state, encompassing various regions of the United States and other countries. In the third season, the characters find themselves in Panama, where they plot another escape from the brutal Sona Prison. The bulk of the fifth season takes place in Ogygia Prison, located in Sana'a, Yemen.

The idea for Prison Break originated in 2003, but Fox postponed the project. Only after the popularity of other series with long, intense narratives grew did management return to development in 2004. The first season received high praise from critics and viewers. Initially planned for 13 episodes, the series' success led to an expansion to 22 episodes. In subsequent years, Prison Break received numerous nominations and awards, including a win at the 2006 People's Choice Awards for Favorite New TV Drama.

All four original seasons of the series were released on DVD, with the first and third seasons also available on Blu-ray. The series aired in many countries around the world and gained a wide international audience.

The series' commercial success led to the creation of a sprawling franchise. Prison Break has inspired short videos for mobile devices, an official magazine, a novel, and a computer game. A standalone miniseries, Prison Break: Proof of Innocence, was also released for digital distribution. The final six episodes of the fourth season aired in the spring of 2009, and the final two episodes were compiled into a feature-length film, The Final Break, which complements the main series ending. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on July 21, 2009.

In 2015, Fox officially announced the return of the series for a fifth season consisting of nine episodes, which aired in 2017. Despite initial comments from the cast about a possible sequel, in August 2019, Fox confirmed that further development of Prison Break had ceased.

Plot

A brief description of the events of the series

The younger brother takes a bold and desperate step to save his older brother from a critical and unfair situation. Lincoln, who was imprisoned on a false charge and an unfair sentence, finds himself in the center of a terrifying judicial nightmare. Michael, firmly convinced of Lincoln's innocence, is not ready to put up with such a blatant injustice. In order to break his brother out of prison, he begins to develop an incredibly complex and thought-out plan down to the smallest detail, which requires from him not only patience and intelligence, but also a willingness to cross the line of the law.

As part of his decisive plan, Michael consciously breaks the law in order to end up in the same penal colony where Lincoln is being held. His goal is extremely clear - to pull off a grand escape, which will later become not only a symbol of brotherly selflessness, but will also go down in history as one of the most daring and skillfully planned escapes. Every step Michael takes and every decision he makes is dictated by a deep sense of duty to his brother, who is surrounded by hopelessness.

At the same time, other participants intervene in the case, whose involvement turns out to be fundamentally important. A lawyer with the determination to get to the truth and a secret service officer endowed with professional skills simultaneously begin their own investigation of this intricate case. As they progress, it becomes increasingly clear that Lincoln's story is just the tip of the iceberg. Eventually, they come across an even more terrifying discovery: Lincoln's case is tied to a multi-layered, national conspiracy that runs deeper than they could have ever imagined. Their journey to uncovering the truth promises to be no less intense and fateful.
