"Rome", a beautifully crafted American historical drama series, is a sprawling 22-episode project set in stunning Italy and produced by three major television networks: the BBC in the UK, HBO in the United States, and RAI in Italy. Initially conceived as a limited-edition miniseries, the project's fate changed when HBO executives received the pilot script in 2002. The script's compelling reception prompted the decision to produce a full 12-episode first season, with a substantial budget exceeding $100 million. High ratings from viewers and critics encouraged the producers to continue working on the project and commission a 10-episode second season.

Filming for the first season began in March 2004 and lasted over a year, concluding in May 2005. Production on the second season was completed in 2006. The filming process was based on sets created at the renowned Italian studios of Cinecittà. This legendary film center, located near Rome, became the site of a meticulous reconstruction of the ancient city's architectural monuments. Iconic sites such as the majestic forum and the capital's poor neighborhoods were restored with astonishing historical accuracy. However, in August 2007, fate dealt a tragic blow: almost three-quarters of the magnificent sets were destroyed in a massive fire.

The first season premiered on HBO from August 28 to November 20, 2005. The series subsequently aired on the British channel BBC One from November 2, 2005, to January 4, 2006, and then reached Italian viewers on Rai Due from March 17 to April 28, 2006. The second season premiered in the United States from January 14 to March 25, 2007.

A brief description of the events of the series

The series "Rome" takes the viewer into the atmosphere of one of the most fateful eras in the history of mankind, when Ancient Rome, experiencing a deep crisis of its republican form of government, found itself on the threshold of global changes. The story centers not only on famous political figures and their struggle for power, but also on the lives of two legionnaires, by no means high-ranking, who, almost by accident, become direct participants in dramatic events that changed the course of history.

The plot begins in the distant year 52 BC, when Gaius Julius Caesar is completing his bloody conquests in Gaul. The commander's victories cause conflicting emotions in the very heart of the republican structure - the Roman Senate. The senators fear Caesar's growing power, seeing him as a threat to the established order. To prevent his triumphant return to Rome with a victorious army, they turn to Gnaeus Pompey the Great, a former ally of Caesar. Pompey takes the side of the Senate, which becomes the beginning of an open confrontation, fraught with a devastating civil war. This war will put an end to the republic and throw the foundation for the formation of the Roman Empire. The action of the series develops against the backdrop of growing political tensions. As Caesar's troops move ever closer to the capital, the atmosphere heats up not only among the military, but also among the powerful Roman nobility, ordinary citizens and slaves. Each side of the conflict faces difficult moral choices and personal tragedies. The split between the most influential people of Rome reaches its climax, and the struggle for power begins to radically change the fates of both individuals and the entire civilization.

The Rome series not only immerses the viewer in the action-packed events of this turning point, but also brilliantly reveals the human side of the historical epic, demonstrating the complexity of the interweaving of personal experiences, political intrigue and the irreversible course of history.
