"The Magnificent Century" (original title: Muhteşem Yüzyıl) is a Turkish historical drama series created by talented screenwriters Meral Okay and Yılmaz Şahin. Based on real historical events, the series allows viewers to immerse themselves in the heyday of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of one of its greatest rulers, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The series' story reveals not only the political and social aspects of this era, but also the deep, complex relationship between the Sultan and Alexandra, a young woman of Slavic descent whose fate is dramatically changed when she finds herself in slavery.

Plot

A brief description of the events of the series

The plot of "The Magnificent Century" takes place in the 16th century in the Ottoman Empire. At that time, the still young Sultan Suleiman assumes the throne after the death of his father and is full of aspirations to expand the empire, dreaming of new conquests.

A new concubine appears in the sultan's harem — Alexandra, who lost her family and ended up in slavery. An intelligent and independent girl converts to Islam, gets a new name Hurrem and begins to attract the Sultan's attention, gradually gaining his sympathy and surpassing other women in the harem.

However, the growing influence of Hurrem causes discontent among the sultan's entourage, and intrigues begin to be waged against her. Hurrem shows ingenuity and determination, which helps her avoid dangers and protect her children.

Over time, there is a hidden struggle for the throne among Suleiman's sons. Hurrem, together with the chief Vizier Rustem, develops a cunning plan against Mahidevran's son, Shehzade Mustafa. These intrigues end in success: the sultan, believing in betrayal, orders the execution of Mustafa.

After the death of Hurrem, Sultan Suleiman continues to rule for another eight years, until he dies on the battlefield, as he dreamed. The new ruler of the Ottoman Empire is Selim, who has earned a reputation as a "drunkard" among the people.
