He drew many of the ideas for the series from the experiences of his friend Ed Burns, a former homicide detective. The city, trapped in its own deep contradictions, continues to exist within the distorted and vicious structures that have become entrenched as the unchangeable rails of its functioning. The result is an unadorned and almost fatalistic view of social processes, where progress seems impossible in the face of systemic problems that have been absorbed into the very essence of urban life.
