"La Casa de Papel" is a Spanish crime drama series created by writer and producer Álex Pina. The project offers viewers a gripping and meticulously crafted narrative built around a series of large-scale heists. The main plot revolves around two grandiose operations initiated by a mysterious strategist known as the Professor, played by Álvaro Morte. The team's first plan is to seize the Royal Mint of Spain, and the second is an attack on the Bank of Spain. The events of the series are told through the personal perspective of one of the gang's key members, Tokyo, played by Úrsula Corberó. Narrative techniques include flashbacks, time shifts, and elements of an unreliable narrator, heightening the tension and adding a tense mystery.

"La Casa de Papel" was originally conceived as a two-part miniseries. The series premiered on Antena 3, airing 15 episodes from May to November 2017. However, the project's fortunes changed dramatically with the arrival of Netflix, which acquired the rights to the series in late 2017. For international audiences, the format was reworked, converting the episodes into a 22-part structure. Netflix released the first part on December 20, 2017, and the second on April 6, 2018. The series achieved such widespread popularity that the company decided to continue it, increasing the production budget. This allowed for the filming of an additional 16 episodes. The third part debuted in July 2019, and the fourth in April 2020. During the same period, the documentary "La Casa de Papel: Phenomenon," chronicling the behind-the-scenes work on the project, was released.

In July 2020, the show's fifth and final part was officially announced. The final season was divided into two parts: the first five episodes premiered in September 2021, and the final episodes premiered in December of that year. Netflix simultaneously released the documentary "La Casa de Papel: From Tokyo to Berlin," which provided a comprehensive look at the creation of the series and its impact on global culture. Filming took place primarily in Madrid, but the team also used international locations, including Panama, Thailand, Florence (Italy), Denmark, and Lisbon (Portugal).

The series received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to Spanish television, profound dramaturgy, and high-quality direction. "La Casa de Papel" garnered an impressive number of awards, including the award for Best Drama Series at the Emmy Awards. The anti-fascist Italian song "Bella ciao," which became a symbol of resistance in the story, gained worldwide popularity and became a European hit in the summer of 2018. By then, the show had cemented its status as Netflix's most popular non-English-language project, capturing viewers in Europe, Latin America, and the Mediterranean region. Becoming a cultural phenomenon, the series set new standards for television quality and global appeal.

A brief description of the events of the series

The plot of the TV series "La Casa de Papel" fascinates with its complex and multilevel structure. Over the course of five seasons, the viewer watches the development of masterfully planned robberies, as well as the inner feelings and dynamics of the relationship between the characters. The main character is a Professor who, with outstanding analytical skills and multi-layered strategies, directs his team to take over banks and treasuries.

In the first seasons, we see how the Professor forms his team, consisting of people with different skills and characters. Each participant is not just a criminal, but a person with a deep history, which allows viewers not only to empathize, but also to understand the motivation of each of them. In order to create the perfect plan, the Professor uses code names based on the names of cities, which adds an additional element of intrigue and symbolism.

When robbers enter the Royal Mint, the case becomes truly epic: they take hostages and within a few days print 2.5 billion euros, which seems incredible and almost unrealistic. The second act of the story takes us to the Bank of Spain, where the team is faced with new challenges and dangers. Here the Professor again demonstrates his ability to adapt, coming up with backup plans. This reflects not only his genius, but also the confusion of the situation his team finds themselves in.

The finale of the fifth season opens up difficult moral dilemmas and tension for viewers. The professor provides Colonel Tamayo with a deal in which both sides win, which raises the question of honesty and morality in a world where unique circumstances require difficult decisions. Instead of gold, the police receive gold-plated bars, and this final twist announces not only accountability, but also a special type of cunning that is so important in their world.

Tokyo's death is one of the most tragic events of the series. Through her experiences and sacrifice, the plot reveals the theme of love, friendship and self-sacrifice. She becomes the voice of the narrative, and her disappearance leaves the audience in deep emotional tension.
